Bakkhali

Bakkhali

Bakkhali is located on one of the many deltaic islands spread across southern Bengal. Most of the islands are part of the Sundarbans, barring a few at the fringes. Some of these are joined together with bridges over narrow creeks. This small island juts out into the vast expanse of the Bay of Bengal. The south facing crescent shaped beach of Bakkhali is one of the rare ones in the world that offer great views of both sunrise and sunset. It is within Frezergung Coastal P.S. (previously Namkhana PS). Sir Andrew Fraser, Lieutenant Governor of Bengal in the early twentieth century, is credited with "discovery" of the place. In recognition of his efforts, a part of the town is named Fraserganj.

The southern part of the delta has numerous channels and islands such as Henry Island, Sagar Island, Frederick Island and Fraserganj Island. This area attracts large number of tourists. Fishing is the primary occupation of the people. There is a fishing harbour at Frasergunj run by Benfish, a wing of the State Government. The long, wide beach of Bakkhali stretches from Bakkhali to Frazergunj. The water and the beach appear grey, as the land slopes into the Bay of Bengal, but the land and the water are both clean.

My first posting was at Kakdwip and when I was posted at Kakdwip I had been to this beautiful place several times during weekends and of course its a beautiful place for picnic during winters. The waves are not as big as that of Digha or Puri but still its such a place which is not crowded and one can really enjoy staying here.
