Howrah Bridge
Howrah Bridge is a bridge with a suspended span over the Hooghly River in West Bengal, India. Commissioned in 1943,the bridge was originally named the New Howrah Bridge, because it replaced a pontoon bridge at the same location linking the two cities of Howrah and Kolkata (Calcutta). On 14 June 1965 it was renamed Rabindra Setu after the great Bengali poet Rabindranath Tagore, who was the first Indian and Asian Nobel laureate. It is still popularly known as the Howrah Bridge.
For me its the landmark of Calcutta. Time has changed but Howrah Bridge still stands strong. It not only connects Kolkata with Howrah district but it connects the people from both sides. As I am from Kolkata so since my childhood days this bridge is very special to me. Now whenever I see this bridge it remind me of my childhood memories. Just want to share an experience with you. Back in 1999 after my Higher Secondary exams and before publication of exams once I thought lets walk and go to the banks of river Hugli. I started walking from Bidhan Nagore station and went to Kumartuli ghat. There I saw the Howrah bridge and thought the bridge is near so lets walk and I just started walking from the banks of the river and I still remember that I walked for almost 40 mins but still no sign close to that bridge but I kept strong and walked more and at last Howrah Bridge. I went till the middle of the bridge from there saw river Hugli offered my prayers and returned home by bus. On the next day I was very tried as I walked for more than 3 hrs and then I went to the roof top of our home and saw the Howrah bridge and thought I can't believe that yesterday I walked there. Now its sad to say the Howrah bridge is no longer visible from the roof top coz of the high buildings in the middle of it. So, bit sad... Anyway we will die one day but this bridge will stand as it is...
