After the oxygen tank explosion crippled Apollo 13, the crew relied on the Lunar Module as an emergency lifeboat and navigated a tense free-return path around the Moon to get home. The Command Module Odyssey later separated and survived a high-risk atmospheric re-entry, finally splashing down safely in the Pacific Ocean on April 17, 1970. The mission became one of NASA’s most dramatic rescues, proving the strength of mission control problem-solving and astronaut survival skills. Apollo 13 did not land on the Moon, but it remains one of the greatest successful failures in spaceflight history.
