Japan's dream of winning the 2026 FIFA World Cup came to a heartbreaking end on June 30. In the Round of 32, Japan faced Brazil at Houston Stadium and made a brilliant start. In the 29th minute, Kaishu Sano scored the opening goal, giving Japanese fans hope that their team could pull off a famous victory.
For much of the match, Japan fought with determination and defended well. But Brazil's experience eventually made the difference. In the second half, Casemiro scored a powerful header to level the match. Then, deep into stoppage time, Gabriel Martinelli found the winning goal, giving Brazil a dramatic 2-1 victory and ending Japan's World Cup journey.
After the match, Japan's head coach, Hajime Moriyasu, appeared at the post-match press conference with tears in his eyes. He struggled to hide his disappointment as he spoke to reporters. He said, "I am very frustrated right now, but I want to accept the result... I could not deliver victory as a gift. My ability as a coach was insufficient. I want to say I am truly sorry." Later, he also told ESPN, "As a head coach I told them that I was really sorry that I was not good enough to lead them to that level."
Many fans praised Moriyasu for taking full responsibility instead of making excuses. His emotional apology stood in sharp contrast to South Korea's coach, Hong Myung-bo, who returned home after his team's group-stage elimination without publicly responding to or apologizing to waiting fans. Moriyasu's honesty and humility earned respect from football supporters around the world, even in defeat.
